Good Introductory Books:

There are a large number of text books available to help the student of Biblical Greek. The most famous introductory texts are listed at the top. Machen's book is a classic, but can be a bit dry. The lexical aids book by Metzger is another classic, and is recommended. Metzger's book lists commonly used Greek words, in order of frequency of use. This helps you get a quick start into the most frequently used words, and has been a favorite among seminary students for decades. A very good beginning text is "Basics of Biblical Greek" by W. Mounce. The Mounce book is especially good for those that have never learned a foreign language, or that need help with general grammar terms, like the definition of "predicate nominative". If you are only going to buy one book, I would suggest Mounce. Mounce also has a separate workbook that goes with the textbook. Another book I like is "New Testament Greek, A Beginning and Intermediate Grammar", by James Hewett. There are a number of "popular press books" like the one by Dobson, "Learn New Testament Greek". It also has a tape that can be ordered separately.

Good Reference Books and Intermediate Texts:

If you want to do more involved word studies, you will want at least one Greek lexicon, an advanced grammar, and a few other reference books. A good next step for Grammar is "Greek Grammar Beyond the Basics", by Daniel B. Wallace. A popular short lexicon is "The Analytical Lexicon to the Greek New Testament" by Mounce, which also has conversion tables from G/K (Gookrick/Kohlenberger) numbers and Strongs numbers. The concordance using these numbers is "The Greek English Concordance to the New Testament : With the New International Version".

For the very serious student, there is one highly recommended set of books by Kittel (10 volumes), "Theological Dictionary of the New Testament (10 Volume Set)". This is an expensive set, so you you might want to hold off on this one! There is an abridged one volume version you might want to consider. Note that the Goshen lexicon and Blue Letter Bible lexicon use information from Kittel's, and is recommended by R.C. Sproul. I don't know anything about the negative comments about Kittel listed on the Amazon site. Kittel is one of the most respected sets of books for in-depth study. Sometimes, these comments are made by people with an "axe to grind". Note that the comments section at Amazon is uncontrolled and anonymous. So don't form judgments based purely on the Amazon.com comments.

If you like books like Metzger's (I do), you will love the book by Trenchard, "Complete Vocabulary Guide to the Greek New Testament"! In addition to cognate groups for every word in the Bible, it contains a frequency list of all words, lists of principal parts of all verbs, and other lists, all indexed by G/K number.
